Mr Baram seeks versatile singers with a wide vocal range who can execute techniques like riffs, runs, falsetto, and belting. While a group can have various vocal ranges, such as bass, baritone, and tenor, a single singer should be able to blend multiple techniques seamlessly to deliver a dynamic and emotive performance.
Essential vocal qualities
- Versatility: The ability to perform various vocal styles, from powerful belts to soft ballads and conversational phrases.
- Range: Singers should be comfortable in different parts of their vocal range, including head voice and falsetto.
- Agility: The capacity to smoothly transition between notes and execute complex vocal embellishments like runs and riffs.
- Projection and Control: The ability to project their voice and tone with power while also having the control to be subtle and emotive.
Necessary techniques
- Riffs and runs: Fast, decorative, and often improvised passages of notes that are a hallmark of the R&B style.
- Belting: Singing powerfully in a higher register, often used for emotional emphasis.
- Vibrato: A slight, rapid, and regular pulsation of a note, often used to add warmth and emotion to sustained tones in ballads.
- Falsetto: Singing in a high, clear, and often soft voice above the normal range.
Group considerations
- Vocal stacking: Creating rich, layered harmonies by having multiple singers, often in different registers, sing the same part.
- Teamwork: Having members who are team players and can follow directions to create a cohesive sound without egos getting in the way.
